We went to the humane society today. A little back story, we moved out of my parents house recently and left our 14 yr old cat there, in the only home she has ever known. I promised my daughter we could get a new cat for her. We hoped to get one in the 1-2 yr old range, our other cat is 1, and we have 2 dogs, and a younger cat would probably be more likely to tolerate our cats energy levels. So my kiddo has been stalking the local shelters websites. She fell in love with one, a gorgeous calico with emerald eyes named Hazel. She was a lover. They had no idea how she was with other cats or dogs, so we took her to the temperment testing room and they brought a cat in. She did ok, hissed then watched it. Then they brought a dog in. That was not good. She was very dog aggressive. claws out hiss attack. I talked my daughter out of that cat, explained I really didn't think it would be fair to Hazel to bring her to a house with 2 dogs when that 1 upset her so much. So my kiddo went and got her 2nd choice cat, Giovanni. Brought him into the room with the dog. Put him down and watched. When the dog got close the cat hissed. But didn't attack, and didn't look overly stressed. It was a more get out of my face type reaction. He reacted similarly to the cat brought in. And Gio came home with us. He was a stray at another shelter that reached the end of his time. The shelter we got him from is a low kill and had room, so he ended up there. They estimate his age at 5 yrs, He's long hair, orange, and currently half hairless. The mats were so bad they had been pulling his fur out. He looks really pathetic, but I don't think he cares. Everytime we pick him up he purrs. He is also very very playful, a good match for our zoo. He's getting along great with our cat, and we caught them sleeping together once. The dogs are a bit apprehensive still and keep their distance. can't find my good camera yet, but have a pic I got with my cell. meet Giovanni. Peanut is now 4 days old. I'm glad I got the scale because I was thinking she weighed 4 ounces, at most. Then I weighed her today and she was 5 5/8 ounces! So we had to adjust her feedings accordingly. The dog will give her baths, but doesn't like Peanut laying with her. I was hoping that I could get them to snuggle up together, but I will settle for baths right now! My dog is not even a year old & she's fixed, so she never had puppies. She seems to be doing good with giving Peanut baths though. I don't leave them alone together. I'm right there and I pet the dog and tell her "good dog" over and over. I was hoping she'd eventually help with pooping or peeing (not that Peanut has any trouble going) but just so it would be more natural. I got her to eat from the bottle today...i'm pretty excited about that. She likes to take a nap after she eats...she's very snuggly ![]() Last night she fell asleep after I was feeding her...I thought it was cute how she curled up in my hand. ![]() Oh also, she purred for the first time today. I was feeding her and she was "making bisquits" and I heard this noise. I was like "what's that" and then I realized she was purring. I haven't had a kitten in problem 6 years, so it threw me off. It was so cute. Makes me feel like she's got a good shot at making it. :) Zara is also called Turrinha which is a portuguese word that means "little bump", my friends called her that because she bumps her head on to people's hands very vigorously asking for love :) ![]() The vet said that female orange tabby cats are rare, which was something I wasn't aware of. She had surgery last week because when I got her she had a huge lump in her tummy. It was an abcess, it was pretty far along and the vet had to remove two of her breasts - the vet added that she was very lucky to be found because the pus was starting to spread and she could have died soon. The strange thing about Zara is, she was born from feral cats and never had contact with humans, but for some reason she came out and, although she was a little scared at first, she was happy to recieve love from people. Usually, feral cats run away at the sight of people, so this was odd. But I'm glad she didn't, because now she's safe and has a home with luff and warmness! :D All my 4 cats have been spayed, even the older ones. Mia is moving to the Netherlands with me and she'll be staying ina house with acess to the street, so it had to be done to prevent babies. ![]() ![]() There's some green in her eyes! ![]() Erika and Mia when they came home after surgery. ![]() Not impressed! ![]() Kitty tongue! ![]() Fat thing! The vet actually had to remove some fat to be able to do the surgery. ![]() Overall, the cost of all the procedures was 377€, which is pretty good considering that includes a free overnight stay for Zara, free teeth cleanings for Mia and Erika and antibiotic shots instead of pills, which has an added cost. The vet was very attentive, she left the cats in a silent room after surgery instead of putting them in a common room with barking dogs like they usually do.I'm very happy with the vet. Right now I'm in bed with all 4 of them, squished in to a corner of my fairly large bed by their "need" of space :P haha Thank you for reading! Fausta doesn't like sharing her spot in the morning sun. Metrobius got an earful. ![]() "I WUZ HAPPY UP THAR IN MAI BASKET! I JUS CAME 2 BE FRENLY!" ![]() ![]() ![]() This sweet, loving, Calico kitty you see below is named Riley. She is approximately 3 years old and adopted me as her mommy when she was 1. Riley has always been very well behaved but has recently developed a behavioral problem. A few months ago, Riley started peeing on the carpet in one particular area of my house. I cannot figure out why she's doing this or how to stop it. She's never had a problem with going potty outside the litter box, and she is still currently pooping in the litter box. I've taken her to the vet, had her urine tested. Everything is normal. The litter box stays clean. It gets scooped twice a day, and cleaned with fresh litter added every other week. But Riley keeps peeing on the carpet, and it's frustrating me beyond belief, especially because this carpet is only 6 months old. The vet recommended Feliway. That didn't work. In fact, Riley would pee right underneath it. I'm constantly having to clean up the pee, and none of the products I got are working to remove the stain or odors. I've also put down puppy pads, towels, orange peels, pepper, and aluminum foil to try to keep Riley away from that spot or at least protect my carpet. None of that has worked. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can prevent Riley from continuing this bad behavior and/or how to save my carpet? I'd really appreciate the help!! Thanks in advance. ![]() I acquired a 3 day old foster kitty today. I've never done this before. She was born friday and her mom passed away this morning.... Peanut (the kittiens name) is going to be my cousins cat. I'm fostering her because my cousin works and can't do the feedings...so I gladly offered. I'm not allowed to have cats where I live, so I figure I can love up on her and get her all healthy, then hand her back to her real mama. I'm not sure how often I should be feeding her. I've read a few different sites that said 2 hours and a few that said I could go up to 4 hours. I fed her at 4 and then again at 6. My cousin brought a kitten bottle with her and the kitten formula, but I don't think she got the formula out at 4....so I switched to an eye dropped and she was drinking that and sucking it down. I worry about overfeeding her... My main concern is keeping her warm. Do you all have any suggestions? I don't have a heating pad, is that something I will need? I made her a box with a towel and a flannel blanket. I put in a stuffed toy of my daughters because I thought she might want something soft to snuggle up and cuddle with. I just want to make sure i'm doing all the right stuff for her....all the vet said was to keep her warm and feed her. She fits in the palm of my hand! I got her to take a nap earlier by sleeping on my chest inside my sweater. Is that bad for her? I know keeping them warm is a concern, but I don't want to keep her too warm. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Enough with the pictures! ![]() It amazes me how much space a ten pound cat can take up, especially on my bed. (I couldn't move so I couldn't get my camera!) It's very chilly today so I covered my legs with a blanket when I was watching TV and Peggy decided she wanted to sleep on my lap. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I LOVE bunny feet! :-D Clickable if you'd like to see them bigger. Ella, one of my kitties, being sweet: ![]() My godkitty Puck, who lives with his mamas: ![]() Dear Kittypixers, I know you guys can understand...and have possibly been there done that. but THIS is what I am dealing with at work. This lays on my desk and sleeps. And when she wakes my fingers are fair game, no matter what I am doing. Oh, and my keyboard is apparently very kitty friendly(despite 2 missing keys). yes I know, crappy cell pictures, but hey, I'm at work and I'm not a photographer, so no camera on hand.... Meet Willie, short for Willamena ![]() ![]() Simba and Lucy discover the top of the wardrobe together. Of course, there was a stack of items on top of the wardrobe that I ended up picking up.
My foster mama had her kittens last Thursday just after midnight.
He was being such a good boy sitting still for an impromptu photo shoot; thought I'd share. ![]() Here's one from our big snow storm. Wasn't sure how he'd get down... ![]() And here's him up on the roof. ![]() It's been a while! ![]() ![]() Hello! This is my first post here. I'm a young 18 year old woman from Finland, living on my own. If my English isn't so good at times, it's only because it's not my native language, sorry. However I'd like to share some pictures of my two precious kitties Irwin and Doris. They're 11 months old now. I volunteered to take care of them until they would find a proper home and I got them when they were about 3,5 months old. As I could guess, I immediately fell in love with them (them being the first cats I've ever even properly known and taken care of) and I fought to get the permission to adopt them myself, because I couldn't bare the thought of never seeing them again. They were mine from day one and I knew it in my heart. Finally on November 8th 2009, I adopted them and no longer had to fear that they'd be taken away from me. Of course it was a huge decision, since I am only 18 and didn't have much experience on cats. But I have no regrets, because I love them with all my heart and I know that there is no better home for these two than the one they have here with me. Their mother lives with this old woman in Tallinn, and when Irwin and Doris were born the woman was going to drown them because she was old and senile and didn't want anymore cats. I don't understand why she didn't just have her cat neutered or something, but I've heard that whenever they had kittens, the woman would just have them killed. It makes me sick to think about this. However, this Finnish organisation heard of this cruelness and got there in time to save this bunch of kittens and that's how I got Irwin and Doris. So they had a bad start in life, but I'm going to try my best to give them the home they deserve. Irwin has a lot of attitude and he is smart! He learned how to open door knobs and he always has a lot to say. Everytime he walks around the house, he has to meow "mommy look at me I'm walking, mommy look at my tail, it's grown!" or "mommy where are you I want food NOW". Doris is smaller and acts like a princess. She seems so fragile and innocent next to her brother. It's like I can do anything I want with Irwin because he likes new adventures and games and he trusts me that even if I play "airplane" with him (like people do sometimes with babies if you know what I mean) he knows that I won't drop him. He also lets me cuddle with him all I want, he's like a teddybear. When I'm playing with Doris I have to be a lot more careful because she hasn't developed that attitude Irwin has - yet - and I have to observe her more to understand her. But if it's possible, she likes to cuddle even more than Irwin! She starts purring the minute I touch her, it's amazing and so rewarding. She climbs to my lap and tries to get me to turn off the computer or to throw away the book I'm reading. She wants all the attention and love she can get. They both sleep with me on my bed every night, Doris mostly laying on my legs and Irwin on my chest. We have this routine every morning: before they let me get up, they both start purring and walking all over me and licking my hands and armpits (haha) and such. Snugglytime, yay! It's my favorite time of day. Doris is pretty smart too, she likes to take naps in the bathroom sink but whenever I'm there and about to wash my hands, she gets up and stands on the edge of the sink so I can wash my hands. When I stop, she goes back to where she was. They both love being around people and playing with their toys and getting attention. They have such good personalities that I can't help but feel blessed. ![]() ![]() Irwin sleeping in a funny position next to her sister and their favorite toy my mom made for them. No, she just likes playing with straws. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Nappy time. ![]() Playtime. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thank you so much for reading and I will keep you updated on my babies. I feel like they've given me meaning and purpose, and most of all love. They saved me and I don't know how I can ever pay them back. ![]() Here are a few pictures of Tori's naptime and playtime. :) ![]() Laying underneath her cat cube. ![]() Tori likes to go on hikes with us in the woods behind our house. ![]() She does not like getting her paws wet though... ![]() Yep, here is the proof. Comet (white boy) walked ONTO my chest and loafed as Cara (grey) lays by. PROOF! (click for bigger pic): I love my cats. -J ![]() this is allie. i got her as a wee kitten when i was ten years old (i'm almost nineteen now). she's my cat. :3 she's very picky about who she warms up to, but i was always her favourite. however, she does adores my boyfriend. she curled up on his lap the first day she met him, which is a very rare sight, because she normally hides when people are over! ![]() ![]() ![]() here she is where she spends most of her time when she's not asleep... in front of the cupboard. why? because that's where the cat treats are located. she is addicted to temptations cat treats. it's not even funny. D: ![]() "you're opening the cupboard? why? are you going to give me treats? are you? oh, please give me some! please?" ![]() "um... how do i get this thing open? ...mom?" D: anyway, now for some snapshots of my sister's cat, joey. joey is a she, by the way. she's allie's sister. believe it or not, they were from the same litter. they aren't very close. ![]() ![]() i kind of woke her up from a nap. ![]() ![]() and that's all, folks! I should be preparing the speech for my graduation, but instead Peggy wanted me to play with her. It's impossible to ignore her, she sits outside my room and meow/chirp, until I get up, and then she makes me follow her to the living room, where she stands next to her toy. So I must throw it in the air for her, and she often fetches it and brings it back, dropping it at my feet. This can easily go on for half an hour, during which I feel compelled to take (more) photos... ![]() She also likes to place the kitty somewhere and then go hide, so she can pounce on it, thinking the kitty can't see her. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then she tries to pretend she's not really interested in it, and she's there 'by pure chance'... LOL ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() How could I possibly NOT take photos of that?? :-p My Valleri passed away at 1.45 this morning. Just about a half hour ago. We will bury her between the plum trees she loved so. She came to us via my daughter. She was an 18 month old newly-given-birth severely abused cat that someone had gotten knocked up and thrown out. We never did find out what happened to the babies, but we nursed her through afterbirth. She loved my children and my husband and despised the ground I walked on. She'd never fail to give me a hiss or a swat or a scratch. That's how we realised something was wrong -- she suddenly grew cuddly with me. Then she stopped eating. She was like this for 2 days and we were planning to take her to the vet Monday and trying to coax water and food down her this weekend. She apparently had other plans. She did not suffer, except for about three minutes right at the end. She literally just seemed to spend her last day sleeping. But she went peacefully and surrounded by family that loved her. I'm a little numb now. When it hits me that she's gone, I'll be sobbing my eyes out, I'm sure. Here is the queen of the house in all her regalness. http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s226/sjlarue/Wulf-monath/Valarie.jpg Rest in peace, Valleri. You were loved. |
